"The Chi": Showtime's New Hit TV Show that is Phenomenal
There have been a lot of different new TV shows coming out lately that people have been buzzing about but, there’s one particular show called “The Chi”, that I personally kept seeing people post about on social media. I’m always late on watching shows that are considered “phenomenal” by the masses. For example, I watched “The Office” for the first time ever on Netflix last year and was so disgusted with myself for being years late to realize how it was an insanely awesome show. After my disgraceful lateness with “The Office,” I made the decision to start checking out shows that people deem “golden” while the shows are still airing.
“The Chi” is a one hour show that airs Sunday nights on Showtime. Without giving too much away, the show centers around four different characters named Kevin, Brandon, Emmett and Ronnie. They all live on the South Side of Chicago and each faces various trials and tribulations on a daily basis. Though the show is extremely new with only three episodes airing thus far, it has garnered major recognition for being incredibly raw, honest, funny and shedding light on how the people of the South Side of Chicago live and survive.
I was instantly hooked on the show 20 minutes into watching the first episode. What’s so captivating about it is how the show shows the real-life dramas, issues and tragedies that people face every day. Plus, if you have never been to or lived on the South Side of Chicago, it gives you a glimpse into what life “looks” like there and how it is most certainly not somewhere you would plan a “getaway” to.
TV shows like “The Chi”, I feel are so extremely necessary for society because they depict the hard and real truths that people in low-income to poor neighborhoods deal with and show what those type of neighborhoods actually look like. They also display the gun violence issue that plagues our society as well as the societal injustices that African Americans face on a daily basis by providing a voice and face to those who go and have gone unheard and unseen.
So, if you have not already, I highly recommend watching “The Chi”. It is an incredibly dope show that is indeed for #TheCulture.
